Newsday – Climate panel meet Tuesday

By Dandan Zou

The public is encouraged to attend the first meeting on Tuesday of North Hempstead’s new climate task force.

The Climate Smart Communities Task Force was formed in January to outline ways to combat climate change. In March, town officials appointed Patricia Katz, Jael Ferguson, Jean Celender, Paula Groothuis, Rosemary Mascali, Stephen Cipot, Carol Frank, Harriett Becker and Patrick Farrell to the panel.

“The Town of North Hempstead wants to be a model of sustainability and resiliency,” said town spokesman Gordon Tepper. “To do that, you have to continuously work to find new ways and new initiatives that will help the environment. That’s what this task force is set up to do.”

The town pledged in 2009 to join New York State’s Climate Smart Communities program. The task force will make recommendations to the town board on efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease demand for fossil fuel and increase energy efficiency.

The virtual meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Contact sustain@northhempsteadny.gov for a Zoom link and other details.
